Drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers are commonly referred to as rehabs or treatment centers because they offer a wide range of therapeutic treatments, clinical programs and a variety of treatment methods to help people deal with a wide range of addictions including alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling addiction etc
A rehab or treatment center is a clinical facility that helps a potential client to begin the process of their journey in recovery by a variety of treatment methods designed to help focus the process of dealing with their addiction or alcoholism.
A drug and alcohol rehabilitation center will focus on the individual as a person, and help them deal with some of the underlying emotional drives that have fuelled their addiction or alcoholism.
A potential client may well be admitted to a rehab because they have a problem with drugs or alcohol or both, but the focus in a rehab will be on helping the client deal with the underlying emotional issues that in many ways seemed to trigger the addiction or alcoholism.
Drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers
A drug and alcohol rehabilitation center will focus to a large extent on helping a client to change their attitudes. There is a saying in Alcoholics Anonymous that if nothing changes nothing changes.
The work of a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center will be on helping the client to understand that their attitudes have often, if not always, put them in situations where they have felt a need to try and be in control of what is going on around them.
Addiction treatment programs that are carried out in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center are inevitably short-term programs. This is because a client is likely to be in rehab for a relatively short period of time, normally between four and six weeks.
For this reason much of the therapeutic work that is done is normally done once a client has left rehab.
The work that is done in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center will inevitably be laying the foundations for other types of therapeutic work done later.
Much of the later work normally be done in a 12 step fellowship such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous.
A drug and alcohol rehabilitation center will normally encourage clients to attend meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous whilst in treatment, and also once they have left rehab, as a form of ongoing care.
A drug and alcohol rehabilitation center should be able to help a client detox or come off any substances they may need to in a safe and controlled manner, and lay the foundations to build a better way of life.
